Hotel Tips

Unspoken Rules of Staying in Hotels

1.    Thin walls are common—even in 5-star hotels.

2.    If you suspect a hidden camera:

o    Turn on the lights to check.

o    Call hotel staff, but record video evidence first before they arrive.

o    Report to the police if confirmed.

3.    Book a twin room even when alone—avoid single beds or king-size beds.

4.    Safety precautions at night:

o    Leave the bathroom light on.

o    Place a chair against the door.

o    Hang a glass cup on the doorknob (alerts you if someone tries to enter).

5.    Always inspect the room for hidden cameras before settling in.

6.    Common hidden camera spots:

o    Near the TV (facing the bed).

o    Inside smoke detectors/sprinklers above the bed.

7.    Use your phone to detect cameras:

o    Turn off the flash, open the camera app, and scan the room—infrared lights from cameras may appear as glowing dots.

8.    Avoid the first or last room in the hallway (considered less secure).

9.    Hotel items (snacks, drinks) are overpriced—buy from a convenience store instead.

10. "Clean" doesn’t always mean sanitary—avoid sleeping naked.

11. Be polite to receptionists—they decide room availability and upgrades.

12. Leave a small light on at night—signals that you’re still awake.

13. Set payment apps to "Mobile Data Only" to avoid public Wi-Fi risks.

14. Only use disposable items—avoid reusable cups, towels, etc.

15. Don’t sign up for hotel membership cards (often a scam).

16. Never let your credit card leave your sight when checking in.

17. Stuff a tissue into the peephole to prevent spying.

18. Ignore "advertisement cards" on the floor—don’t call or accept "services."

19. Bring your own travel-sized toiletries—hotel ones may be low quality.

20. Public toilet seats are low-risk, but use a paper cover for hygiene.

21. Avoid using the electric kettle (may not be properly cleaned).

22. Don’t wear hotel plastic slippers—many get foot fungus from them.

23. Couples: Keep the TV on with volume up for privacy.

24. Rinse glasses thoroughly before use (they may only be wiped, not washed).

25. Avoid rooms where the bed faces the bathroom or mirror (considered bad feng shui).

26. Online bookings are cheaper, but verify photos aren’t misleading.

27. Food delivery isn’t brought to your room—pick it up at the lobby.

28. Extra beds & simple room setups are usually free.

29. Housekeeping won’t change sheets daily unless requested (for extended stays).
